Mets vs. Phils... 2009 Did You Know? Edition

By Chris Pollay

As the New York Mets head to Philadelphia to play the Phillies in their final four games against each other this season, I thought it would be interesting to take a quick look back at the rivalry between the two clubs during the 14 games they've played against each other in 2009.

Did you know that the Mets won a game this season over the Phillies without scoring a single earned run?

On May 6, the Mets won 1 to 0 thanks to a throwing error by Phillies' third baseman Pedro Feliz.

Did you know that each team has only scored one total run in the ninth inning in all 14 games of the series?

The Mets scored their one ninth-inning run on August 23 in a 9 to 7 losing cause; the Phils tacked on an insurance run the next day in the ninth inning during a 6 to 2 victory.

Did you know that, in 2009, Chase Utley has hit the most home runs in the two-team rivalry with six?

Two of them on back-t0-back games (June 9 and June 10) turned out to be tie-breaking game-winners for the Phillies.

Did you know that only two Mets pitchers have earned all five of their victories this season against the Phils?

Mike Pelfrey has the Phils' number with three wins; Johan Santana has notched two.

Did you know that nine different Philadelphia pitchers have earned the team's nine victories during the first 14 games of their rivalry with the Mets?

The bullpen has recorded three victories while starters Cliff Lee, Rodrigo Lopez, Jamie Moyer, Joe Blanton, J.A. Happ and Pedro Martinez have all earned one win a piece.

Did you know that Eric Bruntlett's unassisted triple play (ending the game and preserving the win on August 23) was the second unassisted triple play by the Phillies in franchise history?

Mickey Morandini (2B) recorded one on Sept. 20, 1992

Did you know there have been three extra inning games between the Mets and the Phillies this season?

All three were won by the Phils: 6 to 5 (10 inning) on May 2; 5 to 4 (11 innings) on June 10; and 6 to 3 (10 innings) on June 11.

Breakdown of the 2009 numbers:

Total Wins:

Phillies: 9; Mets: 5

Total Hits:

Phillies: 115; Mets: 122

Total Batting Average:

Phillies: .241; Mets: .262

Total Runs:

Phillies: 65; Mets: 50

Total Home Runs:

Phillies: 19; Mets: 12.
