More Tests for the Mets as Martinez Goes Down
The Mets continue to get hit hard. Fernando Martinez is the next victim to be hit by the injury bug. What can the Mets do to survive the loss of so many players? Perhaps it is time to accept their fate and forget about the playoffs. The Mets' faithful fans still believe, but this time around, they might just have their hopes too high. The Mets have to endure another blow to their roster. SI.com reports that Fernando Martinez is headed to the 15-day DL with inflammation in the right knee. This means the mets have to dip further into their farm system and bring up a third string replacement. The Mets have decided to recall Argenis Reyes. The 26 year old has spent time in the major leagues and has posted a .077 batting average in 13 plate appearances this season. The good news is that the Mets are not oblivious to their responsibilities. According to mets.com, Jerry Manuel said "We might have to play good with this group for a longer period of time than we anticipated. We have to find a way to play good with the group we have. And that's my responsibility." The key for the Mets, since the team is getting younger and less experienced, is to focus on the basics. If they can get the young replacements playing solid baseball on a regular basis, then perhaps they can keep their head above water long enough to wait out the injuries. However, as much as it hurts Mets fans to accept it, I think they are in too deep a hole to get out of and will likely miss the playoffs. But who knows, maybe they can pull of a miracle.

I'm starting to think F-Mart is another Alex Escobar or Lastings Milledge...formerly highly touted prospects that don't pan out. Par for the course...With the exception of Wright, Reyes and perhaps Pelfrey (verdict's still out) the only ones that do pan out seem to be those we trade away.
ReplyDeleteThis brings up a good point. Maybe the problem with the Mets lies in the hands of the general manager and the scouts for the Mets.
