How many sides to one story can there be?

Not that this is new for me when it comes to the Mets, but I'm confused. I like to think of myself as someone who stays on top of the latest information - but am I the only one who didn't know the Mets were in talks with the Blue Jays for Roy Halladay? According to a July, 20 2009 Daily News article, SI.com reported that the Jays offered the Mets Halladay for Fernando Martinez, Bobby Parnell, Ruben Tejada and Jon Niese.

Why wouldn't Omar Minaya strongly consider that deal? Even if the GM considered this year a lost cause, which I'm not sure they do yet, Halladay could fully contribute to next season as well. With the team that was assembled in preparation for the 2009 season, there's no telling where the Mets would be in the standings if everyone stayed healthy. I'd even go so far as to say they'd still be a definite contender.

Of all the episodes of Baseball Tonight and Sports Center I've watched on ESPN over the past few weeks, not once have I heard mention of the Mets in the conversation with Halladay. I know they have a lot of needs right now, the most important probably being a bat, but what could it hurt to add, quite possibly, the best pitcher in the majors?

And as awful as people have deemed the Mets Farm System, it doesn't seem as far gone as we're to believe. For some specifics, check out Eddie D'Anna's article on SIlive.com.

Since Minaya has been around, he has made some interesting moves. Some have worked out, others haven't - and like I've said before, it's hard to know how much blame you can place on the GM and manager when it seems that the talent just may not be there. But what's the case against Halladay? Or making any move right now? I'm not sold either way, but I'd love for him to come out and tell us something. His cryptic quotes are getting a little old. I'd like his side, but in understandable, logical terms.

  1. That's understandable as Mets fan for you to want Omar to come out and speak to the Mets fans and be in the public eye. I guess he does have some explaining to do, but I agree with his discussion to not accept that trade. Yes, he is arguably the best pitcher in baseball, but the Mets shouldn't be going for a guy of that kind of caliber when they are 10.5 games out of first. If no one gets Halladay before the deadline, which is what's most likely gonna happen, the same situation will arise in the offseason and next year before the deadline, so hopefully for the Mets everyone will be healthy by then, and Omar and evaluate the situation more closely and seriously. They aren't ready for this kind of blockbuster trade just yet.

  2. Ah, Brennan...spoken like a true Philly fan who wants Halladay for his team! If this proposed trade rumor w/ the Mets and Halladay was true and Omar just dismissed it, then he should be fired on the spot. The key would be the willingness of Halladay to accept the trade and negotiate an extension. Really no point in giving up prospects just for 2009 (which is a bust) and 2010. But if you can get that extension, this deal is a no-brainer. F-Mart looks like another Alex Escobar, Parnell has been shaky the last 2 months, Tejada will never play on the Mets at the major league level unless he switches positions or they trade Reyes. And as for Niese - nice outing Saturday but really, is he the ace Halladay is? Probably not. But...from what I gather, this proposed Halladay deal was really more rumor than fact. I guess the only people who really know are Omar, Ricciardi and god...and clearly, god isn't a Mets fan.

  4. Halladay will not be a Met. He would have to waive his no-trade clause in his contract, so if he wants to go to a team with no shot of winning this year, then he's better off staying in Toronto.

The only players in this deal are Philadelphia and Anaheim. The Cardinals just traded away a lot to get Matt Holliday so they are out, and the Blue Jays won't trade Halladay within their own division.

  5. Dan, it's not that I think he will be a Met, it's more the issue with the front office, but thanks.
