Hi, my name is Becky and I am a Met fan. There, I said it. Although it doesn't really make much sense. I was raised 20 minutes outside of Boston and for the last four years I've lived about 10 minutes outside of Philly. Yet, I've stayed true to the blue and orange for all these years. Am I crazy? A glutton for punishment? Maybe, but anyone who has supported the same baseball team for over 25 years gets understands my loyalty. It doesn't matter what they do, or what they don't do, I can't give up on them.
I remember '86. I remember the excitement. The ball going through Buckner's legs, and this feeling of absolute joy. I'm not delusional, I know that the chances of that happening this season are slim. Sitting here watching the game. I realize that with the team currently on the field, a Division I college team has a better chance, but even with how crappy they've been playing, they still have moments of greatness. I can't remember the last time I watched a game and was truly happy with how they played, yet as of right now, they're only 2 games behind the Phillies in the NL East and 2.5 out of the Wildcard.
Their pitching isn't terrible. It certainly could be a heck of a lot better, but its been worse. They're not coming up with many clutch at bats, but they have the NL leader in avg., and for back ups, the rest of the guys aren't hitting all that bad. Considering the amount of injuries they've had this season, and that three of their four "stars" are out, the fact that they're only 2 game behind the Phillies is actually impressive. And I'll even go so far as to say that if you take away some of the errors, and a few of the middle relief appearances, they could be in first place. There's no reason they couldn't be. The Phillies haven't been playing all that well, the Mets just haven't been able to capitalize.
But, I'm still holding out hope. They might blow it again this season, and with the hits they've taken in personnel, it wouldn't be all that surprising. But I think they still have a chance. Ask me tomorrow if I feel the same way and you might get a different answer. But no matter how frustrating they are, they're still my team. In three months I may be debating about which bridge to jump off, or maybe I'll be writing about getting tickets to a post season game. Either way, for better, or worse, I'm a Met fan.
